Mr. Men Little Miss- 50th Anniversary
“My dad, Roger Hargreaves, created the Mr. Men series in 1971 and it’s a great accolade to his idea that the Museum of Brands has chosen to feature some of the merchandise that started filling up our home 50 years ago. Through the generations the Mr. Men and Little Miss have been seen on all kinds of products from Mr. Chatterbox radios to Mr. Grumpy easter eggs!”
We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Mr. Men series by Roger Hargreaves this summer.
Mr. Men characters have been well-known friendly faces to children and adults for generations. When Hargreaves’ son Adam asked him what a tickle looked like, Hargreaves drew up the iconic round figure with long wiggly arms which set in motion the 93 characters that make up the series today. Starting with books, the series range has been extended to mugs, stationary, lunch boxes and much more. Mr. Men and Little Miss characters feature in our household brand collection, on products including 1970s yoghurt pots and 1990s bubble bath. Even iconic British celebrities such as The Spice Girls have been adapted into characters.
Until the end of the school summer holidays, we will be sparking children’s curiosity and evoking feelings of nostalgia for grown-ups by hosting a trail that help visitors spot the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters included in our museum displays. For seven weeks from the 23rd of July, we will showcase original sketches by Adam Hargreaves alongside limited-edition Royal Mail postage stamps and Royal Mint commemorative coins.
To add to the fun our little visitors can make their very own Mr. Bump paper hat to take home and colour their favourite Mr. Men and Little Miss characters for us to share with our visitors. In our gift shop we will be selling exclusive Mr. Men products such as confectionary and plush toys which will directly support the Museum of Brands charity.
Admission tickets to the Museum include full access to our exhibitions. By buying a ticket you are helping us to continue with our mission. The Museum of Brands is a registered Charity no. 1093538.
